The isolated Erebia pandrose Apennine population is genetically unique and endangered by climate change

چکیده
Climate change is causing shifts in the distribution of many species and populations inhabiting mountain tops are particularly vulnerable to these threats because they constrained altitudinal shifts. Apennines a relatively narrow low chain located Southern Europe, which hosts isolated species. The butterfly Erebia pandrose was recorded for last time 1977, on top single massif (Monti della Laga). We confirmed presence small, population E. Apennines, at distance more than 400 km any other known populations. Then, we examined cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial DNA marker this across Palaearctic area estimated potential decline over Alps due future climatic changes. Apennine represents an endemic lineage characterised by eight mutations 658 bp analysed (1.2%). In has shifted uphill 3 m per year since end 19th century 22 1995. Species models suggested that will experience generalised loss suitability, which, according our projections, could lead extinction few decades. become flagship advertising risk losing unique fractions genetic diversity

Climate change: is the dark Soay sheep endangered?
It was recently reported that the proportion of dark-coloured Soay sheep (Ovis aries) in the Hebrides has decreased, despite the fact that dark sheep tend to be larger than lighter sheep, and there exists a selective advantage to large body size. It was concluded that an apparent genetic linkage between loci for the coat colour polymorphism and loci with antagonistic effects on body size explai...
متن کاملPopulation and Climate Change
The book examines the role of demographic factors in greenhouse gas emissions and asks how population affects the ability of societies and institutions to respond to the potential impacts of climate change. Based on this review, it considers whether climate change strengthens the case for population policies. The book provides overview chapters aimed at nonspecialists on climate change, populat...
متن کاملPopulation adiposity and climate change.
BACKGROUND The increasing global prevalence of overweight and obesity has serious implications for the environment, as well as for health. We estimate the impact on greenhouse gas emissions of increases in the population distribution of body mass index (BMI). METHODS We estimated the food energy required to maintain basal metabolic rate in two hypothetical adult populations using the Schofiel...
متن کاملClimate Change Hastens the Conservation Urgency of an Endangered Ungulate
Global climate change appears to be one of the main threats to biodiversity in the near future and is already affecting the distribution of many species. Currently threatened species are a special concern while the extent to which they are sensitive to climate change remains uncertain. Przewalski's gazelle (Procapra przewalskii) is classified as endangered and a conservation focus on the Qingha...
متن کاملWeighing the relative potential impacts of climate change and land‐use change on an endangered bird
Climate change and land-use change are projected to be the two greatest drivers of biodiversity loss over the coming century. Land-use change has resulted in extensive habitat loss for many species. Likewise, climate change has affected many species resulting in range shifts, changes in phenology, and altered interactions. We used a spatially explicit, individual-based model to explore the effe...
